Parque Lage, one of Rio's most beautiful parks

Some things pop up over and over as you're doing your research on local attractions to visit at your next holiday destination.

And so you add them to your list of things to do while there, not giving it much more thought.

And then when you actually do visit, they exceed all your expectations, being somehow just better than the guidebooks had made them out to be.

We spent 2 amazing weeks in Brazil, and our brief but brilliant experience at Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro was such a place for us.

But what exactly makes it so special?

For one thing, even though it is not the largest park, what it lacks in size it more than makes up for by being totally atmospheric. Like much of Rio, Parque Lage - situated in Rio's Jardim Botanico neighbourhood - is covered in dense lush vegetation, perfect for a break from the hustling city just outside the gates.

Being part of the Tijuca forest, the park's abundant greenery creates an enchanting atmosphere perfect for nature walks, birdwatching, or simply unwinding under the canopy of trees.

Parque Lage's location certainly helps too - sheltered as it is alongside the Corcovado mountain - and you will be served up multiple magnificent views of the Christ the Redeemer statue overhead as you wander around the Parque Lage trails.

Things to See in Parque Lage

There are a few particular sites to look out for as you make your way along the multitude of meandering pathways that weave around the park.

First off, there is the Grotto - a small set of caves covered in mesmerising stalactites and stalagmites. An artificial construction commissioned by the original owner Henrique Lage, the grotto makes for a bit of fun during any visit to Parque Lage.

Next up is the tranquil Lago das Fadas to discover, a peaceful pond filled with exotic koi fish, filled by a small waterfall.

And dotted around the park, as you follow the winding pathways, you'll find random bits of construction: imposing archways, bridges crossing streams, and even an old abandoned watchtower.

The park is also home to plenty of local wildlife. Keep an eye out for monkeys, and if you're particularly lucky, you might even spot a toucan.

Parque Lage Palacio

Of course, the most eye-catching location inside Parque Lage is the historic roman mansion at the center of the park.

This imposing building was the former estate of industrial magnate Henrique Lage and his wife, the opera singer Gabriella Bezanzoni. With its grand columns and imposing 19th century architecture, the Palacio mansion dominates the site from above the manicured lawns and fountains out front.

Inside the palacio this historic building is equally photogenic, with a beautiful pool at the center. The alcoves all around the pool play host to some local galleries - perfect for picking up a unique local souvenir.

Even better, no tickets are required to visit either the park or the mansion - this one is totally free.

The Plage Café

It is also here in the courtyard of the Parque Lage mansion that you will find the Plage Café restaurant, a great place to grab a seat under one of the umbrellas dotting the patio, for a relaxed coffee or a light meal, together with locals and other tourists.

Parque Lage review

All in all we found Parque Lage a mesmerising experience, and one we are happy not to have skipped over in favour of some of the more well-known attractions, during the 3 days we spent in Rio de Janeiro.

The dense array of trees and plants that envelop the site - including native species like the rubber tree, and varieties of palms, vines, and flowering plants - mean that spending time in the park ambling about the beautiful trails is peaceful and beguiling.

A visit to Parque Lage is an experience that is highly recommended for anyone who loves green spaces, during a trip to lovely Rio.
